THE BAD COP

‘Tell me Rourke,’ I look intently at him through Simonson’s eyes, ‘what exactly is the roll of this Jeffrey Dharma character, why are we paying him a consultation fee on quite a regular basis?’

‘He’s a psychic investigator,’ Rourke is looking uncomfortable.

‘And what exactly does that entail?’

‘Look Chief, I know you’re a straight-thinking man,’ Rourke grits his teeth, ‘you’re a well-respected member of your church and I’m sure you have your own idea of the afterlife.’

‘What the f*** are you talking about?’ Rourke is sinking in his chair, ‘I just asked you why Jeffrey Dharma was on our payroll?’

Rourke took a deep breath, ‘He talks to the dead, the murder victim.’

‘Jesus F***ing H. Christ! Uh, apologies Lord,’ as Simonson I react as the lieutenant would expect, ‘You’re going to tell me next that the victim tells Dharma who their murderer was, am I correct?’

‘That’s about it, Chief,’ Rourke winces, ‘their consciousness remains alive for perhaps several days, after their body dies, Jeffrey’s mind connects with their pineal gland as the victim makes the journey through the Bardo.’

‘Excuse me lieutenant,’ as Simonson I snarl, ‘would you mind speaking to me in American English, what is this Bardo and where the f*** is this pineal gland and what exactly is its function in the scheme of things?’

‘It’s your third eye, Sir,’ Rourke is shaky.

‘Look at me Rourke, tell me how many eyes you can see?’ his chief has a notoriously powerful stare, ‘I’m waiting, how many eyes can you see?’

‘Two, Sir,’ the lieutenant replies.
